Othello De Souza Hartley is a visual artist who works through the medium of photography and film. Much of his work deals with themes of masculinity and blackness. He often photographs the naked body in interesting ways and there is always meaning behind his work. For example his 'Masculinity Project' is a series of photographs on men in traditionally masculine settings such as factories and garages but the men are naked and curled up into balls or lying down in a way in which they appear vulnerable. This contrast between the bare skin of the men and the hard metallic surfaces of the backdrop makes for a striking image. It is also significant that these photos all feature black men, with one image showing a black man lying on the floor of a barbershop, which is again showing a typical masculine setting but the man is exposed and curled up in the fetal position. He also has a series of portraits as a part of 'The Masculinity Project' showing many different men of varying ages, races and body types photographed against a black backdrop.
